Message from VCMB (Research), IMH | |
 |
The Institute of Mental Health (IMH) is the largest provider of mental health care in the country. IMH comprises an inpatient facility that has a total bed capacity of 2,000 beds, and has an outpatient base of more than 35,000 patients. The Institute has a wide and comprehensive range of clinical expertise for the treatment of the various mental disorders.
The Research Division of IMH was established with an Institutional Block Grant (IBG) from National Medical Research Council (NMRC). Since its inception in year 2000, the Division has grown exponentially and is now a core activity for the Institute and is one of its missions. The Research Division supports research at all levels, provides training and mentoring, and establishes collaboration with other centers and stakeholders.
In recent years, we have focused on key research areas, which were chosen to leverage on the strengths of the Institute and the unique characteristics of the Singapore population. We have since seen a steady increase in the number of projects initiated, amount of competitive funding secured, number of publications in peer-reviewed journals, number of presentations in scientific meetings, and the number of awards received.
Our mission is to carry out scientifically and clinically relevant research that will help us understand the mechanisms underlying the various mental disorders and translating these findings either into interventions that will relieve the suffering of patients with mental illness, or help address the real-world challenges that persons living with mental illness, their families, providers, payers and policy makers face in selecting, delivering, and financing optimal care.
Underpinning this mission are several overarching principles:
Principle One: We actively seek out, develop and maintain vibrant and productive partnerships with stakeholders who include persons living with mental illness and their families, payers, clinicians, researchers, and policy makers.
Principle Two: Our research should integrate or translate across levels of analysis from bench to bedside, and should involve the interdisciplinary integration of physical, biological, behavioral, and social science.
Principle Three: There should be timely dissemination of actionable relevant research findings to stakeholders including the policy makers, research administrators, and general public.
